Buying a house isn't an accomplishment.

For most people at least...

Now I don't want to be a hypocrite or anything but let's be very clear for a second. You didn't "buy" a house unless you paid for it in full. Just like that leased BMW 335i that's sitting on your driveway. The second you can't pay for it, you lose it. If you were the actual "owner" this couldn't happen.

Buying a house could be an accomplishment after its all paid off.

You can come brag to me 30 years later when its paid off; but by then I'd probably own about 10 in various places across the Mediterranean...

So you focus on paying your house while I focus on actual opportunities.

You've just proven to that you can do exactly what the other 99% of the population can do as well, live off credit and make payments for the next 30 years. Big deal. It shouldn't even take you 30 years to pay it off, it should take more like 5 if you're actually useful to society and making proper money.

When you look around you, you can see that there are houses everywhere. When you buy a house, how does that make you better than everyone else? It doesn't! You are literally in the same boat as 95% of the people around you so congratulations on being like everyone else... Think about the definition of accomplishment, it means "to complete" or "completion". You haven't completed anything utilizing a mortgage from a bank, you owe money on property for the next 30 years, when its paid off then its "complete".

Even if you did pay it off after the 30 years, so will the other 90% of people in your age bracket. You've worked as a slave for your house which I don't believe success is. It shouldn't take 30 years to pay one thing, your spotlight shouldn't be paying off a house, it should be a goal surpassing everyone else's so that you stand out in the crowd, then you know you've made a difference!

Buying a house with a mortgage is NOT an accomplishment until its paid for in full; then you can say its complete. You are actually in the progress of accomplishing the goal of paying for the house. Next time some fool tries to put you down by saying they own a house, you can just ask them politely:

"Sorry. When do own it?"
